Women in Black (Žene u Crnom) Belgrade, Serbia | 1991–present

Founded in Belgrade in 1991 during the Yugoslav wars, Women in Black is a feminist anti-war collective that has sustained one of the longest-running protest practices in the region. Standing silently in black clothing in public squares, members commemorate victims of war, enforced disappearance, and political violence while challenging nationalism and historical revisionism. Their actions blur the boundaries between activism, performance, and public ritual, demonstrating how artistic and embodied forms of protest can create spaces for collective memory and political dissent.
